AWG Wire Size Chart

Diameter, area and resistance for every gauge, calculated from the AWG definition rather than transcribed. Includes maximum runs for a 5% impedance rule on speaker wire.

AWG is a formula, not a table: each step down multiplies diameter by 92^(1/39). Three gauge steps ≈ half the area; six steps ≈ half the diameter. 12 AWG copper is 1.588 Ω per 1000 ft.

No ampacity on this page — on purpose. Current-carrying capacity is set by NEC (NFPA 70) Table 310.16 plus local amendments, and depends on insulation type, bundling, ambient temperature and the code edition your jurisdiction adopted. NFPA publishes a free read-only edition; use that and your local code rather than any number reprinted out of context.

Gauge numbers run backwards — 4/0 is the largest, 30 among the smallest — because the number originally counted drawing passes, not size.

Speaker wire: the 5% rule

For audio, the usual criterion is keeping wire resistance under 5% of the speaker's impedance, so damping factor stays intact. That is an impedance-matching judgment, not a safety rule, so it is independent of electrical code:

Halve those lengths for 4 Ω speakers.

Voltage drop

L_max = (V × %drop/100) / (2 × I × R_per_ft)

The factor of 2 is the return conductor — a mistake worth avoiding, since forgetting it makes every run look twice as good as it is.

Diameter
Computed from the AWG definition above.
Resistivity
Annealed copper at 100% IACS (ASTM B3 / IEC 60028) and 1350-H19 aluminum at 61% IACS (ASTM B230). ASTM B258 defines the AWG diameters and areas, not resistivity.
Verification
Diameter and circular-mil area checked against six published gauges (4/0, 1/0, 10, 12, 14, 20); maximum deviation 0.15%. Resistance checked separately against the same six: 4/0 = 0.04901, 1/0 = 0.09827, 12 AWG = 1.588 Ω per 1000 ft, all within 0.03%.

Voltage-drop figures are engineering calculations. Wiring must follow local code and be done by a licensed electrician.
